Description

The SparkFun Qwiic dToF TMF8820 Imager is an advanced direct time-of-flight (dToF) sensor, engineered to provide high-precision distance measurements in a wide range of environments. Utilizing the latest Single Photon Avalanche Photodiode (SPAD) technology, along with a time-to-digital converter (TDC) and sophisticated histogram technology, this compact module can detect distances up to 5000mm. Its integrated Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) ensures accurate performance, even in challenging lighting conditions such as low light or bright sunlight. Designed for easy integration into projects, the TMF8820 communicates exclusively through I2C, and its compatibility with the Qwiic system eliminates the need for soldering, making it a plug-and-play solution for developers. This sensor is handy for applications like camera autofocus, presence detection, robotic object detection, and industrial light curtains.

Features

  • High-Precision Distance Measurement: Detects objects up to 5000mm away with a fast and accurate dToF system.
  • Advanced SPAD & TDC Technology: Ensures high sensitivity and precision with sub-nanosecond light pulse detection.
  • 3x3 Multizone Output: Supports multi-object detection across 9 zones, enhancing its versatility for various applications.
  • On-Chip Data Processing: No need for external processing as all histogram and signal analysis is performed within the sensor.
  • Ambient Light Rejection: Integrated optical filter blocks ambient light for reliable readings in sunlight or darkness.
  • Easy Integration via I2C: Connects seamlessly using the Qwiic system, avoiding complex wiring or soldering.
  • Wide, Adjustable Field of View: Configurable up to 63° diagonally, making it adaptable for different use cases.
  • Power Efficiency: Low standby and active power consumption, ideal for battery-powered devices.

Pinout:

Qwiic dToF Imager - TMF8820/TMF8821 - Breakout Pins

Pin Description Direction
GND Ground In
3.3V Power In
SDA Data In/Out
SCL Clock In/Out
INT Interrupt, goes low when data is ready. Out
GP0/SYNC General purpose input/output. This pin can also connect to a SYNC signal to interrupt the TMF8820/TMF8821 if the high power illuminator is operating or syncs the sensor to a camera operation. Make sure to not On SYNC assertion, the VCSEL is immediately switched off (typically after 10 µs), on SYNC de-assertion the VCSEL operation is resumed. In/Out
GP1 General purpose input/output. In/Out
EN Enable input active high; setting to low forces the device into shutdown and all memory content is lost; this is connected to 3.3V via a 10kΩ pull-up resistor when not being used In

Applications

  • Camera Autofocus (Laser Detect Autofocus - LDAF)
  • Presence Detection (computing, communication)
  • Object Detection and Collision Avoidance (robotics)
