Description
The SparkFun Qwiic Mini dToF TMF8821 Imager is a highly advanced direct time-of-flight (dToF) sensor that combines precision and compact design, ideal for a wide range of applications requiring accurate distance measurement. This sensor features a modular package integrated with a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) from AMS, delivering exceptional performance with a detection range of up to 5000mm. The TMF8821 is powered by Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) technology, along with a fast time-to-digital converter (TDC) and histogram processing to provide accurate distance readings. The sensor supports multiple multizone configurations (3x3, 4x4, and 3x6), which enhances its ability to detect multiple objects in the field of view. It also includes a multi-lens-array (MLA) above the VCSEL to expand the field of illumination. Its on-chip processing enables the TMF8821 to perform distance measurements in various lighting environments, from dark to bright sunlight, making it versatile for real-world applications like robotics, gesture detection, and more. In terms of ease of use, the sensor interfaces via I2C through SparkFun’s Qwiic system, eliminating the need for soldering. The board features configurable GPIO pins, an enable pin, power LEDs, and I2C pull-up resistors, all of which are adjustable via jumpers. The compact size of the Mini version (0.5" x 1.0") ensures it fits into space-constrained projects without sacrificing performance.

Pinout:
Pin | Description | Direction |
---|---|---|
GND | Ground | In |
3.3V | Power | In |
SDA | Data | In/Out |
SCL | Clock | In/Out |
INT | Interrupt goes low when data is ready. | Out |
GP0/SYNC | General purpose input/output. This pin can also be used to connect to a SYNC signal to interrupt the TMF8820/TMF8821 if the high-power illuminator is operating or sync the sensor to a camera operation. Make sure to not that On SYNC assertion, the VCSEL is immediately switched off (typically after 10 µs), and on SYNC de-assertion the VCSEL operation is resumed. | In/Out |
GP1 | General purpose input/output. | In/Out |
EN | Enable input active high; setting to low forces the device into shutdown and all memory content is lost; this is connected to 3.3V via a 10kΩ pull-up resistor when not being used | In |
