Description
The SparkFun Qwiic Mini dToF TMF8820 Imager is a compact, direct time-of-flight (dToF) sensor offering high-precision distance measurements within a smaller footprint. Housed in a miniature package, this sensor incorporates a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) and Single Photon Avalanche Photodiode (SPAD) technology to achieve an impressive detection range of up to 5000mm. By combining time-to-digital converter (TDC) and histogram technology, the TMF8820 delivers reliable and accurate distance data. One of the core strengths of this sensor is its 3x3 multizone output, allowing for multiple object detection and enhanced versatility in applications. The integrated multi-lens array (MLA) above the VCSEL expands the field of illumination (FoI), while the adjustable field of view (FoV) allows dynamic adjustments based on the specific needs of your project. All processing of raw data, including signal filtering, is performed on-chip, providing distance information along with confidence values via the I2C interface. This mini version of the TMF8820 is specifically designed for compact projects, featuring the same powerful capabilities in a footprint that is half the size of the standard version. The sensor is Qwiic-enabled, ensuring solderless integration for quick setup and configuration. Additionally, traditional 0.1"-spaced pins are available for breadboard use, offering flexibility in system design. The on-chip optical filter provides excellent rejection of ambient light, making this sensor ideal for both dark and bright sunlight environments, without sacrificing measurement accuracy. With two configurable GPIO pins, an enable (EN) pin, and configurable pull-up resistors, the TMF8820 is highly adaptable for various applications like robotics, camera autofocus, and object detection.

Pinout:
Pin | Description | Direction |
---|---|---|
GND | Ground | In |
3.3V | Power | In |
SDA | Data | In/Out |
SCL | Clock | In/Out |
INT | Interrupt goes low when data is ready. | Out |
GP0/SYNC | General purpose input/output. This pin can also connect to a SYNC signal to interrupt the TMF8820/TMF8821 if the high-power illuminator is operating or syncs the sensor to a camera operation. Make sure to not On SYNC assertion, the VCSEL is immediately switched off (typically after 10 µs), on SYNC de-assertion the VCSEL operation is resumed. | In/Out |
GP1 | General purpose input/output. | In/Out |
EN | Enable input active high; setting to low forces the device into shutdown and all memory content is lost; this is connected to 3.3V via a 10kΩ pull-up resistor when not being used | In |
